Gateway Academy Head wins Silver Award for Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary School

Thursday 26th May 2022 was an important day at all the schools in the Gateway Learning Community as we joined schools up and down the country in celebrating National Thank a Teacher Day, a day on which school communities come together to celebrate the professionalism, passion and commitment of our schools. The Thank a Teacher campaign recognises all staff working in schools; school leaders, teachers, teaching assistants and all support staff such as lunchtime supervisors, caretakers and cleaners.

Staff at The Gateway Academy, Gateway Primary Free School, Herringham Primary Academy, Lansdowne Primary Academy and Tilbury Pioneer Academy were touched at the vast number of thoughtful words, cards and gifts that students sent their way.

But there was a second cause for celebration as staff and invited guests gathered together in the Library to celebrate a very important achievement for Gateway Academy Headteacher Grainne McLaughlin.

We are delighted to announce that Grainne has been named a Silver Winner in the category of Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary School at the Pearson National Teaching Awards.

The Pearson National Teaching Awards are the 'Oscars' of the teaching profession and this is a tremendous achievement, testament to the incredible journey The Gateway Academy has been on since Grainne became Headteacher in 2015. Furthermore, it means that she is in the running to scoop the overall prize - the Gold Award at the Pearson National Teaching Awards UK ceremony to be held in November.

Grainne remained typically modest when asked what the award meant to her; she said: "This is not about me, this is about the hundreds of amazing students in my care, the staff, parents and wider community. We are all in this together where everyone can flourish and thrive, where everyone can 'Improve upon their best' and a community in which we are 'All Different: All Equal'. I am grateful to work with such incredible students on a daily basis and a staff which continuously goes above and beyond to provide fantastic teaching and support to our students".
